Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha (Bhaiṣajyaguru), has long been venerated as a deity who heals illness and relieves human suffering. Believed to dispel all ailments while granting health and longevity, this Buddha has drawn the earnest prayers of those seeking recovery since ancient times. At the center of this composition is the medicine jar (yakko), the iconic attribute associated with Yakushi Nyorai. Surrounding it are botanical motifs derived from the halo design, along with emanation Buddhas (kabutsu) that assist in extending salvation to all beings. Framing the scene is a tortoise-shell pattern (kikkō-mon), layering the auspicious symbol of longevity and good fortune over the deep-seated wishes for vitality and renewal. Healing, health, longevity, and the prayers that sustain life—through the medicine jar, floral forms, sacred emanations, and geometric lattice, the work gives visual form to the compassionate and restorative power embodied by the Medicine Buddha.
