Dainichi Nyorai

Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana) is revered as the embodiment of the universe itself, whose light of compassion and wisdom radiates like the sun, illuminating all worlds and embracing every living being. This work seeks not merely to portray a single deity, but to visualize the vast Buddhist cosmos expanding outward from Dainichi Nyorai. At the center lies a radiant sun representing Dainichi Nyorai, surrounded by an infinite cosmos filled with countless Buddhas. Rather than existing in isolation, these deities are linked by the light of Dainichi Nyorai’s compassion and wisdom, forming a singular sacred world that encompasses all of creation. The imagery also incorporates lotus blossoms and butterflies, inspired by the Great Buddha (Rushana) of Tōdai-ji Temple. The lotus, blooming pristine from the mud, signifies the path from delusion to enlightenment, while the butterfly embodies the transformative journey of life as it is reborn into new forms. The sun, the cosmos, the lotus, the butterfly, and countless Buddhas. Far from being separate, every element is interconnected into one expansive universe.
