Eleven-Headed Kannon

With eleven faces directed toward every realm, the Eleven-Headed Kannon (Ekādaśamukha Avalokiteśvara) gazes upon the suffering and prayers of all beings, guiding them toward liberation. Revered for bestowing practical blessings in this life, the deity embodies not only an embracing, gentle mercy, but also the resolute power to dispel delusion, vanquish evil, and steer humanity along the path of virtue. Among the eleven countenances are tranquil faces radiating serene compassion, wrathful visages that shatter ignorance, fanged expressions that encourage steadfast devotion, and a laughing face that roars away human wickedness to inspire good deeds. Through these varied expressions, the boundless scope of Kannon's salvation is revealed. This painting incorporates the sacred attributes traditionally held by the bodhisattva: the water vase brimming with the nectar of merit, an arrangement of lotus buds and leaves, and the monk's staff (khakkhara) symbolizing deliverance and spiritual guidance. Surrounding decorative motifs drawn from the visual tradition of Buddhist halos evoke the luminous presence of the deity, conveying the radiant warmth of a compassion that shines impartially across the world.
