Benzaiten

Benzaiten (Sarasvatī) is widely revered as a Buddhist deity of music, learning, and good fortune, frequently depicted as an elegant goddess cradling a biwa lute. Alongside this gentle form, however, exists a potent martial manifestation invoked for victory in battle and protection against misfortune. Chief among these is Eight-Armed Benzaiten (Happi Benzaiten), portrayed in majestic dignity while bearing sacred implements. This piece depicts the attributes held by Eight-Armed Benzaiten—the axe, the wheel of dharma, the sacred staff, the sword, and the wish-fulfilling jewel (cintāmaṇi)—alongside the biwa that symbolizes her patronage of the arts.
