Batō Kannon (Hayagrīva)

As the name suggests, Batō Kannon (Hayagrīva) is a manifestation of Avalokiteśvara depicted crowned with the head of a horse. Traditionally revered as a wrathful protector, this deity devours human suffering and obstacles with the relentless vigor of a grazing horse, leading practitioners toward salvation. At the center of this work stands the horse symbolic of Hayagrīva, rendered alongside sacred attributes: an axe to sever worldly desires, a sword to cut through delusion, a jewel-tipped club to shatter passions, the Wheel of the Law representing the power of Buddhist teachings, and prayer beads embodying devotion. Arranged around these elements are wish-fulfilling jewels, evoking the grace, abundance, and spiritual liberation achieved once adversity is overcome. Driven by a force that consumes obstacles, severs attachment, and shatters illusion, the artwork articulates both the fierce wrath and boundless compassion inherent to Hayagrīva through the central horse motif and its symbolic instruments.
